Beyond International Youth Day: Turning Celebration into Year-Round Action

International Youth Day gives the world an important opportunity to recognize the

creativity, leadership and potential of young people. The 2026 theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reminds us that although young people live in different social, economic and cultural circumstances, many share the same hopes: dignity, opportunity, inclusion and a meaningful voice in their future.

However, our commitment to young people must not end when the commemorative day is over.

Young People Are Partners, Not Only Beneficiaries

Young people are often described as the leaders of tomorrow. While this is true, it can overlook the important contributions they are already making today.

Across communities, young people are creating solutions, supporting their families, establishing businesses, advocating for human rights and responding to social and environmental challenges. They possess valuable knowledge, ideas and lived experience.

Meaningful youth empowerment therefore requires organizations, institutions and community leaders to work with young people not simply for them. Young people should be involved in identifying problems, designing programmes, making decisions and evaluating the initiatives intended to support them.

Moving from Recognition to Investment

Celebrating young people is important, but celebration alone does not remove the barriers they face.

Many young people still lack access to quality education, employment, healthcare, digital resources, mentorship and safe spaces for participation. Others experience discrimination, poverty, stigma or exclusion from decisions affecting their lives.

Supporting young people requires sustained and practical investment in:

• Quality education and skills development

• Employment and entrepreneurship opportunities

• Accessible and youth-friendly health services

• Leadership and mentorship programmes

• Digital inclusion and innovation

• Safe spaces for expression and participation

• Meaningful representation in decision-making

  
  

These are not gifts to young people. They are essential investments in stronger, healthier and more sustainable communities.

International Youth Day may have passed, but the responsibility to support young

Governments, civil-society organisations, educational institutions, businesses, families and communities all have a role to play. We must move beyond speaking about young people and begin creating more opportunities to listen to them, collaborate with them and invest in their ideas.
